8 Creative Ways to Decorate a Bedroom Ledge
The great thing about bedside tables and nightstands is that they can store magazines, candles, books, and other little objects. Those who dislike clutter on their nightstands have many creative options to explore. Rather than spend money or buy extra furniture to fill a void in your bedroom, why not consider decorating the high ledge over your bed? Despite its underutilization, this space is great for tiny plants, pillows, or even floating shelves! Consider exhibiting beloved artwork or décor.
Check out these creative ways to use that awkward ledge space above your bed:
- Use it as storage: Because most nightstands lack drawers, you can always add extra storage by hanging shelves on your bedroom ledge. Just don’t overload it to avoid safety hazards!
- Adding plants: Adding plants, whether real or artificial, is one of my favorite ways to decorate a space. They merely create a lovely ambiance, and even if they fade away, they will still offer life and brightness to your bedroom. You may also do this by placing cactus cuttings or leaf shapes from a houseplant straight into some Epson saltwater solution.
- Add throws and pillows: Put a couple of attractive cushions or blankets on the tiny shelf in your bedroom. This looks wonderful if you choose a hue that complements the rest of the room’s decor.
- Put art up there: If you’re lucky enough to have an extra wall, another great way to use your high ledge would be to put up some floating shelves, frames, or even small canvases!
- Put pictures there: Maybe hang up some old family photos or old black-and-white photos from when you were younger.
- Light candles: Candles are one of those things that make a space feel really homey and relaxing but also serve practical purposes as well, like lighting dark spaces. And who says they need to go on your coffee table? Make them feel special by setting them up nicely on your high ledge above your bed!
- Try new floral arrangements: Floral arrangements aren’t just restricted to centerpieces and vases; why not try using flowers in unique ways? Create bouquets out of branches and leaves to display on your high ledge above your bed! It will freshen up your place in a much cheaper way than buying bouquets.
- DIY picture frame: Making attractive picture frames using succulents instead of images is a great way to display significant objects without cluttering.
Miniature Plants on a Planter
Add lush greenery anywhere in your house with miniature plants on your ledge. Find small planters or vases with openings from 1.5 to 2 inches wide that will fit on your ledge. Fill them with small soil, plant one or two plants, and keep them watered regularly. Make sure to place low-maintenance herbs and other small plants that don’t need direct sunlight; some good options include lavender, thyme, rosemary, and chives. It’s also easy (and economical) to find mini cacti or succulents online or at your local gardening center. Cacti are naturally drought resistant, while succulents are easy to care for since they require little water and sunlight—important factors when you have limited space.
Decorating your ledge with greenery is an excellent way to bring color and life into your room. Flowers are great, but they can be short-lived depending on your climate. Instead, consider adding other plants that will last longer, like aloe or ferns. Choose miniature varieties of these plants if you have limited space. If you like more delicate plants such as jasmine or climbing vines, make sure there’s plenty of wall space available for them to grow in their designated areas—especially if you have a high ledge. Consider using metal plant supports for vines so they don’t damage your walls over time.
Picture Display on a Wall Hanging on Bedroom Ledge
A simple, easy, and cheap idea for decorating your bedroom ledge is to hang up picture frames. When you’re all done with decorating your wall hanging, it will look like you have an entire wall of books and art pieces. It can also create an illusion of space in small rooms or apartments. You may be able to use your imagination to think of other ways of displaying pictures on top of your bed.
Another easy option is hanging up art pieces and wall hangings on your ledge. One can simply keep these items inside their closet until they need them and place them in their bedroom when they feel like getting creative with their home decor. Wall hangings are usually not expensive, but if you’re looking for more affordable options, there are still ways to get art pieces and wall hangings without burning through your hard-earned cash. For instance, you can buy used wall hangings at thrift stores or from friends or family members who don’t use theirs anymore. You may also consider repurposing old toys as wall hangings.
Framed Photos on the Shelf Bedroom Ledge
A shelf bed is, as one might expect, elevated off of the ground by several feet. This elevation creates a natural ledge that could be decorated in many different ways—but what’s really interesting is how you can make your shelf bed into a photo gallery. By placing framed photos and decorations on top of your bed frame, you can create not only a neat look but also have easy access to memories from throughout your life. Just make sure you don’t put anything too heavy or fragile directly on top of your mattress!
If you’re looking for some more bedroom ledge decorating ideas, there are many different ways to display your framed photos! Try adding simple decorations such as plants or statues on top of your bed and between your photos. You can also hang up sheer curtains around your shelf bed, which will not only give you privacy but also provide extra space for even more decorative items.
Use Novelty Items on Bedroom Ledge
In order to add interest to your ledge decorating ideas, it’s important that you use something with personality. Using novelty items is one great way to create an interesting, yet not overwhelming look for your ledge. Novelty items are fun and unexpected, while still adding something special and unique. You can find novelty items at many home-goods stores or even online on sites like Etsy or Amazon (for example). There are so many options that it’s hard not to find something you love!
You’ll want to use items that don’t weigh too much and won’t slide off. For example, if you’re planning on using small ceramic or glass figurines or decorative accents, make sure they are glued down well so they don’t fall off of your ledge. Using Velcro is one option for attaching heavier objects that would be at risk of falling without support.
The most important thing is making sure you enjoy your ledge decorating ideas. If you love how something looks on your ledge, then it’s worth finding creative ways to make it work! Remember, you don’t have to use novelty items; using paint or some fun accessories can also spruce up your ledge and give it some personality.
Bowl of Potpourri on Bedroom Ledge
A small, decorative bowl of potpourri on your bedroom ledge can help freshen up stale air and add ambiance. You’ll also have a place to tuck away little items like rings, watches, or necklaces while you sleep—they don’t belong in your jewelry box with your other fine jewelry! Experiment with different types of potpourri to see what smells are right for you; dried lavender is an excellent choice if you prefer fresh floral scents.
But if you prefer stronger scents, try dried rose petals or citrus peel. Just place your potpourri in a decorative bowl on your ledge, and enjoy its sweet scent throughout your bedroom. You can even make your own potpourri using materials you have on hand—just follow our easy instructions for how to make homemade potpourri.
On the Bedroom Ledge, a Candle Holder with Scented Candles
Although it’s definitely not necessary, lighting candles in your bedroom can create ambiance. You can add even more romance to your room by choosing scented candles. Instead of placing them on end tables or dressers, try installing ledges above your bed where you can display candles and items such as photo frames and books. This adds visual interest while increasing safety around combustible materials in your room.
If you don’t have room for ledges on both sides of your bed, think about adding one above your headboard. One of our clients installed decorative bookends around their headboard and placed picture frames at either end. This idea can work well if you have family photos you want to display and it helps ensure they don’t get lost among all of your other items. It also creates space between their sleeping space and storage furniture in their room.
Mason Jar with Plants on Bedroom Ledge: For those who prefer greenery in their rooms, ledges are an ideal place to showcase plants or flowers that match your bedroom decorating scheme.
Shadow Boxes to Showcase Memories
Your bedroom is an intimate space that you spend plenty of time in, so it makes sense that you want to decorate it and make it feel like home. One way to add personality is by using a ledge or shelf above your bed to display photos or trinkets. Shadow boxes are an easy way to showcase one-of-a-kind items. They can help tie your room together and provide extra décor for any other items on display.
Though you can buy shadow boxes at nearly any retail store, it’s easy and more cost-effective to make one yourself. You don’t need much in order to create one; all you’ll need is some cardboard, heavy paper, and glue. Cut your cardboard into a rectangle that measures approximately 8 inches by 12 inches, with smaller pieces for lining on each side. Cover both sides of your rectangle with heavy paper using spray adhesive or rubber cement. Attach two small pieces of cardboard inside along either side so that when you add items, they won’t fall off easily. For extra strength, use masking tape around corners or uneven parts before applying glue or other adhesive.
Artificial Flowers or Plants
If you want some greenery on your ledge, but can’t manage to keep plants alive or don’t have enough light for real flowers, fake ones are an excellent option. Artificial flora will add color and life to your decor, but won’t require you to remember daily watering sessions. You can place these in almost any vase or container (though be sure that whatever material it is doesn’t stain or damage your ledge!). Smaller-sized artificial flower arrangements are often easier for low-lying ledges and usually won’t need any trimming! The best part about using artificial flowers is that they don’t require any maintenance once they’re set up.
If you want actual plants on your ledge, make sure they’re securely fastened to avoid harm. The planter or other container must accommodate the plants and any associated accessories (such as rocks or decorative material). Be sure that your planter has drainage holes if it’s a dish-shaped planter! Most plants require regular watering, so make sure you’re checking back on them often.
